The project for the construction of a new modern hospital in the city of Polis Chrysochous in Cyprus is gradually moving from words to real action. Almost two months after the official announcement by the country’s president, the relevant authorities have announced the first tender, which effectively opens an important stage in the implementation of the large-scale initiative.
The State Health Services Organization has launched a competition through the electronic public procurement system. This concerns the selection of consultants and designers who will prepare a full package of tender documentation for the implementation of the project under the Design – Build – Maintenance model. This format promides a comprehensive approach: from design to construction and subsequent maintenance of the facility.
The cost of the current contract is estimated at approximately 50.5 thousand euros excluding VAT, and applications from interested companies are accepted until early April 2026. This stage is considered key, as it will lay the foundation for future construction.
What the design of the new hospital includes
As part of the announced tender, the future contractor will take on a wide range of tasks related to project preparation. First of all, this involves collecting and analyzing all available information about the future facility, as well as a detailed assessment of the region’s needs in medical infrastructure.
Special attention will be given to developing the architectural concept and functional plan of the hospital. Experts will also carry out technical and economic calculations, including an assessment of construction, maintenance, and design costs. An important part will be the preparation of alternative engineering solutions that will allow choosing the most effective implementation option.
Additionally, specialized studies are included, including geological surveys, as well as the preparation of recommendations for engaging highly specialized experts. As a result, a full package of documentation necessary for the next stage — the main construction tender — will be formed.

Why the region needs a new medical center
The need to build a new hospital is due to objective problems of the existing infrastructure. The current medical facility in Polis Chrysochous serves a vast and geographically remote area, including regions from Tillyria and Akamas to the mountainous villages of Paphos.
The existing buildings and equipment are long outdated and do not meet modern European standards. This limits the ability to provide high-quality medical care and does not cover the real needs of the population.
The creation of a new hospital is seen as a strategic solution aimed at eliminating these problems. The project should not only improve the level of medical services but also strengthen citizens’ trust in the public healthcare system, as well as contribute to the socio-economic development of the region.
Where the hospital will be built and how the site was selected
After the official announcement of the construction, specialists conducted a comprehensive study of possible sites. The process involved government services, the municipality, and relevant authorities. More than six potential sites were considered, evaluated according to a number of criteria, including accessibility, terrain features, development costs, and expansion prospects. As a result, three sites with a total area of more than 21 thousand m2 were selected.
This territory allows for the efficient organization of transport flows, separating access for patients, ambulances, and technical services. After accounting for infrastructure constraints, about 15.5 thousand m2 will remain available for development.
What the new medical facility will be like
The project of the future hospital is still at a preliminary stage, but the main parameters are already known. The construction of a building with one floor and an additional upper level is planned, with a total area of about 12.8 thousand m2.
On the first level, there will be: an emergency department, outpatient clinics, a pharmacy, diagnostic services, physiotherapy and rehabilitation areas, as well as a medical records archive. Outside, a helipad and parking areas are provided, including spaces for people with disabilities and public transport.
The upper floor will include operating rooms, inpatient departments of various specializations, and a hemodialysis center. This format will make it possible to provide comprehensive medical services in one place.
Implementation timeline and recent government decisions
According to current plans, the main construction tender is scheduled to be announced in September 2026. The completion of all works is planned for autumn 2028, making the project one of the priorities in Cyprus’s healthcare sector.
To accelerate implementation, the government has already approved the procedure for land acquisition on which the hospital will be built. This decision was made in March 2026 and fully complies with the established schedule.
It is expected that the new medical center will become an important step in modernizing the country’s healthcare system, providing residents of remote areas with access to high-quality and modern medical care.
