In Cyprus, there are plans to build a modern center for patients with rare diseases called House for Rare. The project is being implemented by the Karaiskakio Foundation, which has already announced an open tender to select a contractor.
The cost of construction and subsequent maintenance of the facility over five years is estimated at 2 million euros. Funding will be provided with the support of the cooperation program between Switzerland and Cyprus, as well as with the participation of One Dream One Wish. Applications from companies are accepted until April 24, after which an important stage of project implementation will begin.
What the future center will look like
The new rare diseases center will be built in the Strovolos area of Nicosia, next to the foundation’s existing facilities. The building will be modern and energy-efficient, meeting nearly zero energy consumption standards. The total construction area will be at least 850 m2. The center will include two levels and is designed to ensure maximum comfort for patients and medical staff. The architecture of the building will harmonize with the surrounding development, and the location will provide convenient access for both visitors and employees.
What will be inside the center
The new medical facility will include key areas for diagnosis, treatment, and patient support. In particular, the new medical institution will include:
- patient reception area;
- doctors’ offices;
- rooms for individual and group consultations with a psychologist;
- sensory diagnostics room;
- administrative offices;
- multifunctional hall for events and lectures;
- auxiliary premises and technical areas;
- staff kitchen and a feeding room.
The area around the center will be landscaped. There will be convenient parking, walking paths, modern outdoor lighting, and most importantly — the necessary infrastructure for people with disabilities.

Construction timeline and project launch
The construction of the center is planned to be completed within 16 months after the start of work. After commissioning, the contractor will be responsible for its maintenance and for fixing possible defects for five years. It is expected that after opening, House for Rare will become an important element of the healthcare system of Cyprus and will help improve the quality of life for patients with rare diseases.
Why this project is important for the country
The construction of the rare diseases center reflects Cyprus’s desire to develop modern medicine and expand access to specialized care. In recent years, attention to such diagnoses has been growing in Europe, and the creation of such centers is becoming a necessity.
The new facility will make it possible to combine medical care, psychological support, and social adaptation of patients in one place. This is an important step toward a more humane and effective healthcare system focused on people.
