In Athienou (Larnaca), the active renewal of the urban environment continues, which in the coming years may completely transform the appearance of the municipality. After the reconstruction of the central square began in December last year, the authorities are preparing to launch a second major project aimed at modernizing the area known for its traditional taverns.
The financing of the initiative became possible thanks to the support of the European Regional Development Fund. The total cost of construction works is estimated at approximately 3 million euros, making the project one of the largest for this region in recent years.
Large-scale works and implementation timeline
As part of the project, a comprehensive reconstruction of part of Archbishop Makarios III Avenue is planned, as well as a significant section of Evagorou Street, located in the historic center. The tender has already been announced, and companies can submit applications until April 24. The start of works is expected in the second half of the year, and their completion is projected in about two years.
The upgrade will affect not only the road infrastructure but also the overall appearance of the area. The authorities intend to fully replace road surfaces and sidewalks, modernize the stormwater drainage and sewer systems, and introduce new urban elements, including lighting, landscaping, and improvements.
Preservation of traditional architecture
Special attention is being given to restoring the facades of buildings located along the streets being renovated. Architectural work is planned to return the structures to their historical appearance, characteristic of the Mesaoria region. This will help highlight cultural heritage and create a more authentic atmosphere for residents and visitors.
Today, such projects are becoming an important part of tourism development in Cyprus. Authentic neighborhoods with traditional architecture and local cuisine are attracting more and more visitors, especially amid growing interest in gastronomic routes and rural tourism.
Comprehensive development and investments
At the same time, another major project is being implemented — the reconstruction of the square near the churches, including the area around the church of Panagia Chryseleousa. The cost of these works amounts to 3.1 million euros excluding VAT.
As part of the upgrade, the creation of paved areas, new parking spaces, modernization of water supply and stormwater drainage systems, as well as the installation of modern lighting and urban infrastructure are planned. Some utilities will be moved underground, which will improve both the appearance and functionality of the space.
Impact on the city and prospects
According to Mayor Kyriakos Kareklas, the implementation of two projects in close proximity will become a key factor in transforming the city. As a result, Athienou will be able to significantly increase its attractiveness for both residents and tourists.
Against the backdrop of overall infrastructure development in Cyprus in 2025–2026, such projects are becoming part of a broader strategy for the renewal of small towns. Improving the urban environment, preserving cultural heritage, and investing in public spaces not only enhance the quality of life but also stimulate economic activity in the regions.
